The Alpine Run Project, the brainchild of John McAvoy, supported by JD Sports and Nike and delivered by Youth Beyond Borders, was an incredible experience that changed the lives of 12 young people, including myself. I grew up in foster care and bounced around between 16 families by the time I was 15, but this project allowed me to immerse myself in trail running and embark on a trip to Chamonix, France, which was the most meaningful thing I have ever done.
Trail running in the high mountains can be incredibly challenging, but the Alpine Run Project shocked my system in the best way possible. Not only did it push me physically, but it allowed me to grow as a person. The experience was unforgettable and will remain a cherished memory for years.
I discovered that if you can get kids into sports, you can show them that "you're not a prisoner of your past" and that "you can make the first step to live a better and healthier life." The project was not just about trail running. It was about challenging oneself, discovering new abilities, and building resilience. It was also about building a community of like-minded people who support and inspire each other. Being on the trail with other participants, including some of the most elite trail-running athletes in the world, was an incredible experience that pushed me to go beyond my limits.
John Mcavoy's mentorship and support have meant the world to me. The support from JD Sports and Nike was incredible, and it made the project accessible to young people who may not have had the opportunity to participate otherwise. Youth Beyond Borders did an amazing job in delivering the project and ensuring every participant had the support they needed throughout the journey.
The Alpine Run Project has been an incredible journey for me. Not only did it allow me to push myself physically and mentally, but it also allowed me to discover the world of film and photography. Working alongside the world-renowned photographer Jered Gruber, the multi-award-winning filmmaker's team at Cut Media, and the award-winning professional photographer and documentary producer James Mitchell has been an unforgettable experience. Their guidance and mentorship have helped me to develop my skills and discover new passions. I'm excited to see where this journey will take me next.
In conclusion, the Alpine Run Project was an experience that I will never forget. It showed me that anything is possible if you set your mind to it and gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to participate in this life-changing project and would encourage anyone who has the chance to take part in it to do so.
Best David
